Will the AI make up answers or hallucinate?

Hallucination, a confident answer that sounds right but isn't grounded in your store, is the classic failure of generic chatbots. Simple Chat counters it in two ways: replies tie back to your actual Shopify data, and when context runs thin the assistant admits uncertainty instead of inventing something plausible.

The reasoning is blunt. One wrong return policy or fabricated product spec erodes trust faster than a five-minute wait for a human ever will.

Where answers have to come from

Products, articles, policies, FAQs, and the rest of your configured content. The assistant is not meant to freestyle store-specific facts from general training data. When a question concerns your shipping rules, a product detail, or stock, the answer should trace back to what Simple Chat can see in your account, the same sources your team would check.

The grounding covers operational questions too. Order status, tracking, and catalog-linked recommendations pull from live store data. No imagined order numbers, no fake tracking events.

When it's unsure, it says so

For store-specific questions the available context can't settle, the assistant acknowledges the limit and offers to escalate to your staff, who can verify and reply with authority. Customers hear "I don't have that confirmed" instead of plausible fiction about warranty terms or shipping exceptions. Quick help on grounded topics, a clean handoff when the grounding isn't there.

Your judgment still applies

Grounding and escalation are defaults, not a substitute for oversight. You review conversations, tune merchant instructions, and decide which tools the assistant may use. Routine FAQs and catalog questions stay in the widget; ambiguous or high-stakes calls route to people. Your team also sees what the assistant already tried, so nobody repeats a failed guess.
