This Cookie Policy explains how Simple Chat uses cookies and similar technologies on simple-chat.com, in the Simple Chat app, and in the storefront chat on stores that use it.

1 - What We Mean by "Cookies"

"Cookies" are small text files stored by your browser. We also use similar technologies, such as local storage, session storage, and measurement pixels. In this policy, "cookies" includes them.

2 - simple-chat.com (Marketing Website)

  • Shopify: simple-chat.com runs on Shopify, which sets its own essential and analytics cookies under the Shopify Cookie Policy.
  • Google Analytics: cookies (such as _ga) that count visits, the pages you view, and clicks on links to install Simple Chat.
  • OpenAI Ads Measurement Pixel: measures visits and install-link clicks that may be attributed to ads in ChatGPT. The pixel may store an OpenAI-provided attribution identifier in a first-party cookie.
  • Install-link attribution: session storage (sc_install_attr) keeps the campaign values (utm_*) and ad click identifiers of your visit and adds them to the links that install Simple Chat. When your visit has any of them, the install link first passes through our app server, which stores them in a cookie (sautm) for 3 days so that we can attribute the install to the campaign or ad.
  • Chat: the Simple Chat storefront chat on the website uses the browser storage described in section 4.

When your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, simple-chat.com loads no Google Analytics and no OpenAI pixel, and keeps no install-link attribution.

3 - Simple Chat App

The Simple Chat app runs inside the Shopify admin, where Shopify sets the cookies that sign you in. The app uses browser storage to keep your preferences and drafts, and Google Analytics to measure how merchant staff use the app; Google Analytics receives the store's ID and domain. When your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, the app loads no Google Analytics.

4 - Storefront Chat on Merchant Stores

On a store that uses Simple Chat, the chat stores the following in the customer's browser:

  • Essential and functional: a random chat ID, the state of the conversation, a sign-in token, unsent drafts, and when the customer last used the chat (kept for 7 days). The chat ID is also added to the cart and to the items the customer adds, so that the store can connect the chat to the order.
  • Marketing and attribution, only with consent: when a customer opens a link from the store's emails or chat messages, the chat keeps the link's ID for 7 days and adds it to the cart, and records the page where a link from a chat landed. This shows the store which emails and chats led to orders. The chat does this only when Shopify's consent tools allow marketing on the store; without that consent, it stores and sends none of it. If the customer withdraws consent, the chat removes the stored link ID and adds no more, but a link ID already added to the cart stays with that cart.

Without browser storage, the store can also attribute an order to a back-in-stock email delivered to the same email address in the 7 days before the order, or to the landing page that Shopify records for the order.

The store, Shopify, and the store's other apps may set their own cookies under the store's cookie banner and policies.

5 - Cookie Categories

  • Essential: Required to operate the website, the app, and the chat.
  • Functional: Remember settings, drafts, and chat history.
  • Analytics: Measure how people use simple-chat.com and the Simple Chat app.
  • Marketing: Measure our ads on simple-chat.com, and, with consent, measure which emails and chats led to orders on merchant stores.

6 - Your Choices

  • Browser controls: You can block or delete cookies and browser storage in your browser settings. Blocking them may reduce or disable some features.
  • Do Not Track: simple-chat.com and the Simple Chat app respect the signal as described in sections 2 and 3.
  • Store consent tools: On a store that uses Simple Chat, the store's cookie banner controls marketing and attribution.
  • Google Analytics: You can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

7 - Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy as our technology and legal requirements evolve. Updated versions are effective when posted.
