Does the chat widget work across browser tabs?

Yes. A customer with your store open in three tabs sees one conversation, not three empty chats. The storefront widget synchronizes across tabs: message history, the widget's open state, and the ongoing conversation context carry over as the shopper switches, instead of resetting each time a different tab gets focus.

Shoppers genuinely work this way. They compare products in several tabs and keep checkout open while browsing elsewhere. With sync, someone who asked a question on a product page and then opened a second tab for sizing doesn't have to re-explain what they were looking at.

On the staff side

One thread per customer session instead of several fragments all asking the same thing, which means fewer duplicate conversations and fewer confused handoffs. Sync also pairs naturally with page context: as the customer moves between tabs and pages, the assistant can keep grounding answers in what they're browsing without the customer repeating product names.

Nothing to configure

Cross-tab sync is built into the storefront widget. To see it, open your store in two tabs, send a message in one, and confirm the other reflects the same conversation. One note that isn't a limitation: if a customer fully closes the browser or clears site data, they may start fresh on a later visit. That's normal browser behavior, not a gap in the sync during an active session.
