Can customers request a human agent?
Yes, at any point, and the request is honored immediately. Asking for a person triggers escalation to your staff; it doesn't start a negotiation with the bot.
The wording doesn't have to be exact
"Human," "agent," "live person," "real person," "someone on your team," "transfer me to support." All of it reads as the same intent, and the assistant escalates right away rather than arguing the customer back into self-serve. Plenty of shoppers happily use AI for quick answers and still insist on a person for refunds, complaints, or a high-consideration purchase. Both preferences get respected.
After they ask
The conversation moves to your team's queue with every prior message intact. Staff get notified and pick it up when they're available.
The customer stays in the same chat the whole time. No starting over elsewhere on your site, no hunting for a separate support email, and whoever takes the thread sees the order numbers, product links, and explanations already exchanged.
Why the handoff is immediate
Delaying human access after a clear request burns trust fast. Escalating on the first ask respects the shopper's preference and cuts repeat prompting, and it leaves your team's attention for the conversations that need judgment, empathy, or policy authority, while the assistant keeps handling routine lookups and FAQs for everyone else.
