How do I customize the chat widget appearance?
You customize the storefront chat widget in the Shopify theme editor, using Simple Chat’s app block settings—not a separate design tool buried only in the app admin.
That approach keeps the widget visually aligned with your live theme the same way you edit sections and blocks elsewhere in Online Store.
What you can change in the theme editor
From the app block settings for Simple Chat, merchants typically control:
- Colors — Match primary brand colors, buttons, and backgrounds to your theme palette.
- Border radius — Sharper corners for a minimal look or softer radius for a friendly consumer brand.
- Light/dark appearance — Set light mode, dark mode, or automatic behavior (see the dark mode FAQ for details).
Because these controls live in the theme, updates publish with your normal theme workflow—preview on desktop and mobile before saving.
Step-by-step: edit the widget on your theme
- In Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
- Click Customize on your live or draft theme.
- Navigate to the template where the chat block is enabled (often global via theme app embed or a specific section—use your theme’s Simple Chat placement).
- Select the Simple Chat app block in the sidebar.
- Adjust color, radius, and theme options; preview on the storefront preview pane.
- Save when the widget matches your brand on both mobile and desktop breakpoints.
If you use multiple themes (seasonal, international), repeat for each theme that should show chat.
Why theme-editor customization matters
- Consistency — The widget inherits your merchant’s visual decisions alongside headers, fonts, and buttons you already tuned.
- No code required — Designers and marketers can iterate without developer deploys for every color tweak.
- Safe rollback — Theme drafts let you experiment without instantly changing production.
For assistant name and avatar, use Branding settings in Simple Chat—that identity is separate from colors and radius in the theme block.
